Experience the highest tides in the world!

Just steps from Friars Bay Inn & Cottages, the Bay of Fundy boasts the highest tides in the world. Tides in this coastal zone can reach a peak of around 16 meters or 50 feet! This tidal phenomenon exists because the bay has a few distinct features: a substantial amount of water and a unique shape and size that causes resonance. Twice everyday the bay fills and empties a billion tons of water during each tide cycle–that’s more than the flow of all the world’s freshwater rivers combined. To truly admire this remarkable sight, you’ll need to visit the same area in the Bay of Fundy twice, six hours apart. In this short time, the tides can expose a vast expanse of ocean floor (1).

Campobello Island provides beautiful views of the bay and tide shifts. Come visit us to experience the stunning views of the historic Head Harbour Lightstation while watching the amazing tides along the bay.
